So what exactly is MAOTY?
ULYSSES CLUB INC.
“MOTORCYCLE APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR” AWARDS
Ulysses Club Inc. is the largest motorcycling organisation within Australia and is once again hosting the National “Motorcycle Apprentice of the Year” (MAOTY) Award as a means of promoting and enhancing the motorcycle training environment within Australia.
The seed to implement MAOTY was sown in April 2003 where Stephen Dearnley saw that there was a need to “encourage and promote our youth in pursuing a career in the motorcycle industry”; this would also instil confidence that the highest standard of trained Motorcycle repairers are accessible to our members, ensuring that their motorcycles are in capable hands.
Seven years on, MAOTY has become very competitive with many apprentices vying for the opportunity to gain National status. It is also a significant opportunity for employers and Registered Training Organisations (RTO’s) to not only achieve recognition for their apprentice but to promote their business entity, focusing on the knowledge and skills gained to perform the delicate and often complicated repairs and diagnostic tasks so necessary in the service sector.
Traditionally, each year, a fourth year motorcycle apprentice who, whilst fulfilling the required criteria, also shows commitment, dedication and a genuine enthusiasm for their chosen profession, is selected as the overall national winner. In Albany (2010) the 2009 National MAOTY winner, Matthew McLoughlin who trained at TAFE Sydney Institute and was employed by Bike Biz, NSW, was the lucky recipient of the magnificent Honda CB400.
This year we have again been extremely fortunate to obtain very generous prizes for each of the zone winners (TAS/VIC, ACT/NSW, SA/WA and QLD/NT), who will receive a Sidchrome 176 piece Tool Kit donated by Supercheap Auto.
During the formalities of the Civic Welcome Ceremony, the 2010 National winner will be personally presented with a fantastic new Honda CB400 motorcycle, generously donated by Honda MPE Australia. QBE Insurance will also present the National winner with 12 months comprehensive insurance cover for the motorcycle.
Ulysses Club Inc. is extremely indebted to major sponsors, Honda Motorcycle and Power Equipment Australia Pty Ltd, Supercheap Auto and QBE Insurance for these very generous awards and we look forward to continuing these alliances into the future.
The National Committee also thanks Adjudicator, John Branch, Industry Consultant, Queensland Automotive Skills Alliance, who once again graciously agreed to judge all zone winners to select the National winner. Appreciation also goes to the various state / zone Registered Training Organizations for their support in backing the MAOTY award and we sincerely hope that MAOTY continues to have a positive influence on the enrolment of motorcycle mechanic apprentices.
