HUNTER COALFIELDS
Cessnock lies in the Hunter Valley at the base of the Watagan and Broken
Back Ranges, adjacent to the oldest wine growing region in Australia.
Built on the road known as the Convict Trail, the original road from Sydney to
the Hunter Valley, which was hand built by 3000 convicts.
Named "Cessnock Estate" after an 1826 land grant, Cessnock became a major
coal mining centre at the turn of the century, but only 1 coal mine still
operates in the area today. The local name " The Coalfields" is now the
gateway to the vineyards of the Hunter Valley.
